EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION – 25 JANUARY 2011

The 2011 Egyptian revolution (Arabic: ثورة 25 يناير‎ thawret 25 yanāyir, Revolution of 25 January) took place following a popular uprising that began on Tuesday, 25 January 2011 and is still continuing as of December 2011. The uprising was mainly a campaign of non-violent civil resistance, which featured a series of demonstrations, marches, acts of civil disobedience, and labour strikes. Millions of protesters from a variety of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Despite being predominantly peaceful in nature, the revolution…

Paper Plane (vimeo) Praesent non nulla id risus

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved…

Big Buck Bunny (HTML5) faucibus placerat eget at est

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of «de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum» (The Extremes of Good and Evil)…

For some men, staying in shape may override body weight

(Health.com) — Men who carry around a few extra pounds may be able to offset the health risks of being overweight by staying — or getting — in shape, even if they don’t manage to shed those pounds, a new study suggests. «Fitness over time may be more important than fatness, when it comes to survival,» says Marc Gillinov, M.D., a heart surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio, who was not involved in the study. «But it is a package deal. You have to focus on both.» The study,…

Legal action urged in damning report on Olympus

TOKYO (Reuters) – An independent panel issued a damning report into the $1.7 billion accounting scandal at Japan’s Olympus Corp, urging legal action against executives behind the cover-up and the replacement of others who knew about it. «The core part of management was rotten and the parts around it were also contaminated by the rot,» the 178-page report, commissioned by the company, said. «In the worst possible sense, the situation was that of the tribal culture of the Japanese salaryman,» it added, referring to a culture of absolute loyalty to…

Human rights key in combating AIDS among gay men: WHO

Vast improvements in human rights and access to treatment are needed to protect gay men against HIV/AIDS, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Monday. «If you want to achieve zero new infections, you have to address the human rights issues,» WHO official Ying-Ru Lo said after a meeting about infection rates among gay men at the International Conference for AIDS and sexually transmitted infections in Africa (ICASA). She said stigmatisation and high levels of discrimination blocked access to AIDS treatment, boosting infection rates among gay men in developing countries. «We…

Fake malaria drugs a growing problem: experts

Fake or poor quality malaria drugs are boosting resistance in parts of southeast Asia, a problem that is likely to worsen unless tighter regulations are adopted, US experts said Monday. «The malaria parasite has a history of adapting to drugs and adapting to insecticides,» Regina Rabinovich, director of infectious diseases at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, told a hearing of US lawmakers. «Drug resistance to the most effective drug available, artemisinin-based combination therapy, is developing and has been recognized in southeast Asia.» Last month, the World Health Organization said…

Obama prods GOP on payroll tax

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama accepted a move by Senate Democrats to scale back his Social Security payroll tax cut extension on Monday, then prodded Republicans to support it despite a requirement for the very wealthy to pay more taxes. Obama also called on lawmakers to renew a program of extended unemployment benefits due to expire on Dec. 31. He said the checks, which kick in after six months of joblessness, are «the last line of defense between hardship and catastrophe» for some victims of the recession and a…
